Excess consumption of fat is one of the major causes of disease and premature death in modern societies. It is associated with the current epidemic levels of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, breast, colon and prostate cancer. Certain types of fat are essential for maintaining optimal health. A health promoting diet consisting of adequate quantity and quality of essential fatty acids, while avoiding excess intake of fat.
Fatty acids are one of the components that make up fats. Humans require some of these fatty acids, which are appropriately called essential fatty acids. They are considered “essential” because they must be obtained through our diet. There are two types of fatty acids, called the Omega-3 fatty acids and the Omega-6 fatty acids. Essential fatty acids serve important functions in the body. They assist in the formation of cell membranes, play a vital role in brain function, assist in maintaining healthy skin and hair among many others.
The best way to get your needed essential fatty acids is by eating a health-promoting diet derived from whole natural foods. Essential fatty acids are found in green leafy vegetables, flaxseeds, soybeans, nuts, and seeds. These sources will provide adequate amounts of EFA’s without the problems associated with animal products. We do not need to turn to animal foods, oils or expensive supplements for our EFA’s.
Focusing on a diet composed of whole, fresh, ripe, organic plants in meeting requirements for our EFA’s is a great strategy. The emphasis on fat intake should always be on “low fat”. Keeping fat intake at about 15 percent of your daily caloric intake is a reasonable mark. Staying clear of hydrogenated and saturated fats is recommended in the pursuit of good health.
